Cecelia lived in a house on the moors,

Just a wee shack, much smaller than yours.

She had a fondness for living out on her own

Even with one, a house is a home.

One bright, moonlit night, on a bloodthirsty prowl

A werewolf announced itself with a howl.

Poor Cecelia jumped right out of her skin,

It scratchbanged the door, forcing its way in.

With the colour drained from her young, pretty face

Cecelia could feel her heart beat apace.

“What should I do?” she said with a frown,

“It won’t be long before my door is torn down!”

She went to the door and swallowed her fright,

It creaked as it revealed a monstrous sight.

Filling the frame of the door with its size

The beast stood before her, fire in eyes.

“Oh, my dear sir,” she said with a smile,

“You must be hungry from your walk all this while,”

The werewolf regarded the girl, perplexed

Its muscular shape then grotesquely flexed.

“Come now, sit down,” She pulled out a chair

Inviting the werewolf to place himself where

Cecelia had prepared her own evening meal,

A special treat of potatoes and veal.

The werewolf sniffed at the food on the plate

And even though cooked, made the beast salivate.

Within but a minute the food was consumed

Leaving Cecelia desperate and doomed.

“That didn’t take long!” She stood, hands on hips.

The werewolf just snarled, licking its lips.

“I know,” she said, “I’ve got just the thing.”

“I’ll make you a banquet fit for a king!”

Dinner for werewolves is not quite the way

That people prefer to spend the end of their day.

The werewolf, bemused, remained perfectly seated

Still quite confused by the way he was greeted.

“Now let me see, veal was your first course.

How about steak pie with a thick gravy sauce?

Cecelia knew there was no time to waste

Werewolves aren’t known for their sensitive taste.

She brought out the gravy, some left from before

Took the pie from the larder, which fell on the floor!

“Goodness me, I’m all mishaps and fails.”

As she scooped up the pie she put in some nails.

“I’m dreadfully sorry, but it’s not a big deal.

I hope this won’t spoil your evening meal.”

The werewolf sniffed, and sniffed some more.

Cecelia’s plan was for nought, she felt sure.

Within moments the whole lot was devoured.

A pie full of nails and not overpowered?

This beast had quite a tough constitution

Cecelia hoped for even one slight contusion.

Yet still it sat, incongruous at table,

A huge, shaggy shape of terror and able

To gobble her up without much delay.

Oh why didn’t it succumb to her foul play?

Cecelia recalled an Achilles Heel

She would lace sterling silver within the next meal.

“A fish course,” she said, “though the order is wrong.

I am making it up as I go along.”

She unhooked her necklace while fetching a trout.

Discretely, she pushed the chain into its mouth.

Presenting the dish, she said with a smile,

“You’ll find no richer fish for many a mile.”

Again the beast sniffed and opened its jaws.

It pawed at the fish, which it hooked in its claws.

With one single swipe, the trout was no more,

Then the werewolf let out an almighty roar!

“This has to be it,” she thought to herself.

No ideas left and no food on the shelf.

The werewolf grabbed its throat and its chest,

With a plaintive howl it slumped over in rest.

“Could it be dead? Can it be true?”

But the beast was still breathing and about to come to.

Its eyes batted open, she felt a terrible thrall.

“Will nothing kill this beast once and for all?”

Swiftly, Cecelia grabbed closest to hand

The shovel she used for tending her land.

She sliced through its neck while the beast was inert.

“I hope you realise you’re not getting dessert!”

With one swift motion the beast was no more.

Its head had tumbled and rolled on the floor.

Followers of this blog might have seen Tinplate Bob before, and it was suggested by a few friends that he might make a good character for a children’s story. I gave this some thought, and decided to go ahead with it.

This is an A5 paperback book for children between about 3 and 6 years of age, has over 25 story pages and is full colour throughout.

It tells the story of Harry and Lizzie, who is taken by their dad to visit their grandma. Grandma is an inventor of a crazy and unusual mechanical creations, but her favourite is Tinplate Bob, a little yellow robot made from an old toy she found in a junk shop.

The children become friends with Tinplate Bob, learning about friendship and sharing while they play.

Although you can buy the paperback of the book, but I’ve also made it available as a childrens book download. This download is priced at only £1.99, and is in Kindle-friendly .PDF format.

You can order both of these now from my Lulu.com bookshop. You will find example pages for each book when you look at their descriptions. I’ve also added some images here to give you an example of some of the illustrations.

Incredibly, I have not only reached my target of £250, but exceeded it! I am proud to say that my little icons have raised £358.00 for Shelter. This means that to those who have donated, you’ve helped an organisation to provide help, support and advice not only to those who survive without a home, but also those who need support to keep a roof above their heads. This can be anything from managing finances to trouble with agencies and landlords/ladies.

So, in a bit of a celebration of an Icon A Day here are all of the icons in order.
